The Person

I was recently asked to fill out a number of questions for an employee spotlight thing my office does and I figured I should share my responses on the site. Read along if you'd like to know a little more about the person behind site:

Who is your favorite architect?

Renzo Piano, no contest. I appreciate his craft and the idea of building full sized mock ups in order to fully figure out and understand a design, because I honestly don’t think you can be a great designer unless you know how to effectively build what you design. Combined with the use of light, the Piano Workshop has produced some of the most beautiful buildings of today.

What building of theirs inspires you the most?

I knew about the Nasher before it was constructed, I saw it being constructed, I researched it for multiple projects during school and I visit it frequently. It’s probably not the most inspiring building but I feel a personal connection to it and if I ever need a reminder of why I love architecture a simple trip to the nasher will always help

Word on the street is that you’re a DJ.  Tell us about this hobby.

Haha. I wonder how that got leaked? Yes, it’s actually how I paid my rent through college.  I’ve always had a passion for music and during college I joined a dance organization that made me their official music guy. At a particular event for said organization I was asked to play some music and a few weeks later I was asked to Dj at a bar on 6th Street in Austin. The rest is history.

What is the number one travel destination on your bucket list?

Freshman year of college I bought a poster of Christ the Redeemer in Rio De Janeiro. My dream was to go down there during the world cup but unfortunately it didn’t happen. Visiting Brazil is definitely on my bucket list and I’ve also set a goal of celebrating my 30th (still a couple of years away) on the mediterranean.

Describe yourself in three words:

Short, Clever, Determined

As a child, what did you want to be when you “grew up”?

I’ve always wanted to be an architect. I was introduced to the profession at an early age and I’ve been working at it since about age 13. I like to say I have over 10 years of experience in the industry because, even though my input was minimal, I’ve always been around building construction or design.

What is your favorite restaurant in town?

Some people squirm when I say this but I eat to survive. Take me to Chik Fil A or take me to Five Sixty and I’ll like them both the same. I have no preference as long as I’m hungry and the food is tasty.

What is your spirit animal?

I don’t even know what a spirit animal is… and I don’t feel like googling it so I’ll have to say monkey because I like monkeys. They’re hilarious and I really wish I had one so I could buy a little hat and take him to the bar with me…

Which character, fictional or not, do you most relate to from a movie or book?

I don’t watch movies or read books so this is a difficult question. I am Batman!!

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Waking up every morning… in case you haven’t noticed i struggle with that every day…

What is your all-time favorite movie and how many times have you watched it?

Again, not a movie person but a movie that’s always stuck with me is Saving Private Ryan. I can’t say that I’ve watched it a countless number of times but every time I do I get consumed by the action. It’s a great production!

Can you tell us your stage name while dropping beats?

Haha. This again. People who went to UT and/or frequented 6th Street from 2006 - 2012 know me not as Manuel, Manny or any variation of it, till this very day they all call me Skoolboi.

Thanks for Listening!

Yours Truly,
